Elite Cycling Coaching — Colorado
Expert insight paired with unparalleled dedication. We'll design your path to peak performance — on the road, the MTB trails, or the Leadville start line.
About the Coach
Originally from Australia, I moved to the US in 2013 to ride professionally — racing across North America and competing in some of the biggest events in the sport. A decade in the peloton, from European circuits to domestic pro races, gave me a deep understanding of what it actually takes to perform at a high level.
My path to coaching started with a career low: a knee injury I didn't handle correctly, which led to surgery and time off the bike. Rebuilding from that forced me to research and create an entirely new training approach — one that worked around my situation instead of ignoring it. The following season I achieved a career-best result at the Tour of Colorado. That process became the foundation of everything I do as a coach.
I've coached athletes from juniors through to Olympic medalists, helped riders land professional contracts, and guided athletes to national championships across road, MTB, and CX. Every training plan I build is designed around the individual — not a template.
Highly personalized programs designed to streamline progress and boost confidence. By setting small, achievable goals, we help put your long-term objectives in reach while developing the physical and mental resiliency to push past roadblocks without losing fitness.
Every athlete has unique goals, time constraints, and challenges. We optimize training and recovery so you can put in power where it matters, avoid burnout, and get more from your schedule. Learn to anticipate obstacles and know how to get back on track when life happens.
Sports are as much about community as performance. With First Wheel, you sign up for the training — and spend more time doing the things you love with the people you care about. Your goals become ours from day one.

What They're Saying
I've been working with Joe for many years, individually and within a team environment. He is understanding of my needs as an athlete — whether it's making a training plan with a lot of variation to keep things interesting or helping me make small achievable goals. He always puts my mental and physical health into consideration when designing plans and looking at long-term goals.
He is easy to talk to and helps me break down harder races into what went well and what we can focus on in the future. Before I started working with Joe as my individual coach I quit the sport entirely. I started working with Joe, explained my goals, and he designed a plan to get me there. I had a breakthrough season — coming out stronger than I ever was and feeling motivated to keep working towards something bigger.
Natalie — U23 National Champion 2024, Professional with Mayenne Cycling
After roughly three weeks of consistent communication and following Joe's regiment, I already noticed the benefits in my performance. If it wasn't for Joe's experience and being able to put himself in my shoes — he's been a successful pro for a decade — I'm not sure I would have been able to pick myself back up. It just goes to show Joe genuinely cares about his athletes, and will put them first.
Jake Silverburg — Road Cyclist, 303 Project
Having someone so approachable, engaging, and flexible with my training needs has been the next step I've needed for my racing career.
Shawn Neer — MTB Enduro, Yeti Factory Racing
Working with Joe has changed a lot of how I look at training. Seeing consistent growth in my training and having obtainable weekly goals has helped with my confidence to reach and meet the goals set for the race season.
Brad Macdonald — Road Cyclist
At the start of college, my training was inconsistent — often leaving me either over- or under-training. Joe provided structure and guidance and I began to see real improvements. His plans are flexible enough to accommodate life. I never imagined I would be able to win local races or be competitive in collegiate cycling, but with Joe's guidance, that has become a reality.
Sylvia Espinoza — CU Boulder, TTT National Champion
Joe has an athlete-first mentality and understands that the most important aspect of training is balance. He lets me decide what to prioritize and supports me around my input. He's helped guide me through many stages of development — from just starting to take cycling seriously, to helping me achieve my professional aspirations in the sport.
Beckett McVoy — Cal Poly, Coached since 2019
Beyond the Bike
Cycling is the core of what I do — but the same principles that build elite cyclists translate directly to Hyrox performance. Periodized training, aerobic base development, and race-day execution matter just as much on the competition floor as they do on the road.
If you're a Hyrox athlete looking for structured, data-driven coaching from someone who has competed at a high level, I take on a limited number of Hyrox athletes each season.
